Large Residential

"When space is not the limiting factor it is easy to 'over design', packing too many elements into a design that ultimately results in a sense of claustrophobia, not to mention the additional cost. It has taken many years to appreciate that some of the best designs are a result of what has not been included and there is a huge value in the spaces left 'un-designed'"
"Every garden tells a story, this narrative is even more important in a larger garden and one of the most difficult concepts for clients to grasp when thinking about the space. I like to consider the narrative from the outset. How do you move from area to area? What is the route? Is it direct or convolute? Do the material changes dictate a different mood? How do materials change the speed of movement? Is the plant palette reflecting the character of a space?"

"My skill in designing outside spaces comes from the ability to view the garden as a succession of chapters, inter-linked by connected pathways and level changes. Each chapter unique and yet part of the whole picture."
"Another big consideration with larger plots is the range of materials and how they flow from area to area. It is easy to get carried away and to 'over do' the number of materials, once again creating a busy design that feels dis-jointed."

"I am keen to explore a limited palette of quality products with clients, using them for multiple purposes and in creative ways. Spending a little more on quality will extend the longevity of your garden and reduce the maintenance requirements. Durability also ensures that you have a more sustainable solution to the garden, minimising the pressure on natural resources. When limited life materials are supplied I am keen to establish the ease of recycling to help eliminate the environmental impact."
